The 1977 season started with Joe Montana third on the depth chart at QB behind Rusty Lisch and Gary Forystek. Montana entered the third game of the season, against Purdue, in the fourth quarter and ten points down after Lisch was ineffective and Forystek suffered a career ending injury. He led Notre Dame to 17 points and the win and the starting job was his. Notre Dame went undefeated for the rest of the season, and by beating #1 ranked Texas 38-10 in the Cotton Bowl, were crowned National Champions.
