Rudy Ruettiger played as a defensive end and, at times, as a linebacker during his high school football career at Joliet Catholic High School in Illinois. Despite his smaller stature, he was known for his determination and passion for the game. His perseverance and hard work ultimately led him to pursue football at the collegiate level, culminating in his time at the University of Notre Dame.

After graduating from high school, he took a job there to save money for college, aspiring to play football at the University of Notre Dame.
