Fireman's Helmets were originally make out of a very heavy, stuff leather.

Modern helmets are made from a very strong fiberglass & plastic combination that will not shatter when hit, can withstand intense heat, and are much lighter than the leather that they replaced. They are well padded and insulated

on the inside.

Soldiers helmets are now made from a material called Kevlar. Kevlar is a product from DuPont and is not only used in military helmets for vests for law enforcement.

Leather or Lycra material with padding in them appears to be the most common.
