The Ashes is a cricket trophy contested between England and Australia every two years. The name comes from the fact that the trophy itself is a small urn which contains the ashes of the stumps used in the first ever match between England and Australia.
There is a lot of rivalry between the two countries over the Ashes and the competition between the players can often get quite fierce.
A label containing a six line verse is pasted on the urn. It is not known who wrote the verse, though plausible conjecture gives the authorship to Florence Morphy. The verse reads: : When Ivo goes back with the urn, the urn; : Studds, Steel, Read and Tylecote return, return; : The welkin will ring loud, : The great crowd will feel proud, : Seeing Barlow and Bates with the urn, the urn; : And the rest coming home with the urn.
