Optional mark is a type of marker on the field. It's used to mark where the ball should be for a free kick in the game.

By definiton an "optional mark" would be a line, dot, or other method of symbolism that is recommended but not required to be placed on the field of play.

Optional mark is sometimes used by the referee to mark the free kick position and also to demarcate the minimum distance between the free kick taker and opposition players.

It helps in greater accuracy of marking the free kick position, makes it sure for the player from where he should take the free kick.
