The three known stance are OPEN, CLOSED, and SQUARE stance. They vary in the front foot or the one nearest the pitcher. The square stance is the one being taught because it is the stance where you can cover both inside and outside pitches.

When you say techniques...that refers to means and ways to make a skill easier. It's important to follow technique to make the movement more efficient in softball. The easier and quicker the less time to execute a skill the faster the movement.

Techniques may include: using both hands when catching, having a big stride in pitching, proper ready stance in base running..etc
