There are a few beliefs about the origins of the socks, the most widely believed being a tribute to the burgh of Govan (indeed Govan High School still uses black & red in its uniform). Others believe it to represent the funnels of ships built in the shipyards of Govan. There is also a theory that black was chosen as a practicality to hide the dirt that was inevitably accrued during games and the red because of the Red Lion.
