The best way to become a better defender is to continue playing against opponents. You cannot learn where they will go and what they will do unless you guard a large variety of players.

The basic defensive strategies are to stay low while holding one hand at about 2 o'clock (to cut off the pass up high) and holding the other hand at about 7 o'clock (to cut off the pass below).

If your opponent is quicker than you, give him some space. If your opponent is a shooter, go above the screens set in front of you, not below. When a shooter shoots the ball, do not attempt to block it; rarely are any shots blocked outside of the key. Instead, hold both hands straight up and resist jumping forward (but try to jump straight up in the air).

if its the point gaurd your gaurding, and hes faster than you, you probably want to step about five feet away from your opoent, bend your knees, and spread your arms. But, always remember if its a point gaurd or shooting gaurd, or any gaurd, you want to stay btwn the Basketball goal and him at ALLL TIMES(:

get in defensive position, slide with them, keep your hands up, and stay in front of them!!! and don't forget to blockout!
