The team now known as the New York Yankees in 1901, playing in Baltimore with the name "Orioles." The team moved to New York in 1903 and did not adopt the name "Yankees" until 1913.

The National League team playing in Chicago has a continuous history since 1876. The team now known as the Braves has also existed since then, although they have changed their city more than once. The NL team playing in Philadelphia has had the name "Phillies" continuously since 1883.

Major League Baseball traces its roots back to 1876. During that first season the National League was created. The league was made up of eight teams originally. Six of those were the Red Stockings of Boston, the White Stockings of Chicago, the Red Stockings of Cincinnati, the Dark Blues out of Hartford, the Grey from Louisville, and the Brown Stockings that called St. Louis home.
