98 yards by Steve O'Neal of the New York Jets against the Denver Broncos on September 21, 1969.
In 1965 game with Duncanville, Texas High School a punter, JIM RAGER of Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, 105 YARDS !!!! and with little wind to has back. Line of scrimmage was his own 4 yard line. He was 4 yards deep in his own end zone when the ball went off his foot. It went over the defense's head, hitting nose first on the Duncanville 47 yard line, then shot like a rocket, ending up 1 yard deep in the Duncanville end zone. Bishop Lynch ended up winning the game 8-7.
Bill McMurray, a sports writer for the HOUSTON CHRONICLE , has the story about this.
In 1965, if a punt went into the end zone, 20 yards were deducted from from the length of a punt. Therefor, RAGER was credited of only a mere 76 yard punt. This, inspite that the punt actually traveled 105 YARDS from launch to rest.
