4 numbers have been retired by the Mets; 37, 14, 41 and 42. Casey Stengel's 37 was retired on September 2, 1965. Gil Hodges 14 was retired on June 9, 1973. Tom Seaver's 41 was retired on July 24, 1988. Jackie Robinson's 42 was retired by the MLB on April 15, 1997. Numbers 8, 24, and 31 aren't retired but aren't worn. Gary Carter's number 8 hasn't been worn since his induction to the Hall of Fame in 2003. Willie Mays's 24 has only been worn twice since his retirement in 1973 (Kelvin Torve in 1990 by mistake and Rickey Henderson in 1999-00 and 2007). Mike Piazza's 31 hasn't been worn since his departure from the Mets after the 2005 season.
