Founded in 1960 in part in response to the formation of the American Football League and of a team in Dallas, the NFL Cowboys struggled, not winning a single game in 1960. After five straight losing seasons the Cowboys finished 7-7 in 1965 and began the first of many playoff runs in 1966. They made the playoffs eight straight times and won Superbowl VI. After missing the postseason in 1975 they raced to nine straight playoff runs and victory in Superbowl XII. After making the playoffs in 1985 the Cowboys slumped, and coach Tom Landry, on the job since the team's founding, was fired, replaced by University of Miami coach jimmy Johnson.
Johnson won just one game in 1989 and had traded star player Herschal Walker for a plethora of draft picks; with them he drafted Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, and other players who founded the core of a team that in 1992 surged to win two straight Superbowls. Johnson, however, could not get along with new Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and was fired after the 1993 season. Following a 1994 playoff loss to San Francisco, the Cowboys signed Niners free agent cornerback Deion Sanders and the team won Superbowl XXX. After this off-field controversies and mediocre team building limited the Cowboys to two playoff wins (1996 and 2009).
