In simple terms the drift defence tries to push the attacking ball carriers towards the sideline and makes the attack go laterally (across the pitch not toward the defending posts). It is not as aggressive as the blitz or a fast man-on-man defence. It won't hurry the attack. The other team is less likely to make a line break against you, but they are more likely to get over the gain line.
