C. I. F. stands for the California Interscholastic Federation. For high school sports, the federation recognizes selected athletes under its jurisdiction who stand out by naming them to All - C. I. F. teams for various sports each year. This is a very distinguished recognition because, for California, this is the highest recognition for lack of a unified state all-star designation.
The federation is split into about ten (10) sections in California. Some schools and school districts are excluded from the jurisdiction of the C. I. F. For example, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has its own governance and LAUSD athletes are not eligible for recognition by the C. I. F. Likewise, C. I.
