a zone defence is where instead of each player marking an individual player from the other team they pick positions on the defensive side of the court and defend the players in and around that area, an example of a zone would be a 2-3 zone this would set up like this 2 players on opposite elbows of the free throw line 1 player underneath the basket and 1 player at opposite sides of the block each player is responsible for the player in their zone, a zone moves around as the ball moves around on offensive the zone moves to cover any weak areas exposed from the ball being moved
