A "spiker", generally a middle or and outside hitter, receives the set and hits it, palm open, to the other side of the net. Occasionally the "spiker" will be a back row hitter, who can't cross the ten-foot line when hitting. Btw, they aren't called spikers, they're called by their position.

A spiker in volleyball is an attacking player who attempts to score a point by hitting a powerful overhand shot. Almost all players on the court are eligible to spike; the exceptions are the defensive specialist (the libero) and back-row players who do not make their takeoff behind the 3m line. Also, the setter is eligible to spike, but typically does not spike so as to utilize his/her setting skills to set the ball for the spiker to kill.
