A ruck is where a player has been tackled and has been gone to ground after both opposition and their own players have joined and created a ruck. The hands must NOT be used in a ruck after it has been formed.

A maul is often formed after a line-out or kick off has happened and the tackled player has been held up on their feet, and both opposition and their own players have joined it as it is. A maul may be pushed by the ball possessors to gain some ground or by the defense team to protect the goal line. It is the role of the defenisve team (those not in ball ownership) to attempt to pull then ball from the holding player this is known as "ripping the ball". A maul may progress from where the ball is held by a player in the centre of the "maul" to the ball being passed backward to the last person in that maul. The maul may contine to move forward toward the defending teams goal line. This is a "rolling maul". England are one of the few who have perfected this really well and use it to great effect to protect a ball carrier and gain ground.

A maul occurs when the ball carrier is caught by the opposing side. The carrier will try to present the ball back toward his own side. When one of each side or more then attempt to fight to gain control of the ball a maul is formed . If the ball carrier falls to the ground it becomes a ruck

A mual happens when the ball carrier is held by one or more opponents, and one or more of the ball carrier's team bind on the ball carrier. As soon as a maul has formed other players can join in but, as in a ruck, they must do so from their own side (from behind the back foot of the last player). If the maul stops moving forward, and the ball is not available to be played, then the referee can award a scrum to the side not in possession when the maul began .

A tackle occurs when a player carrying the ball is brought to ground be opposing team player. A Maul is when the ball carrier is held hp by either their own or opposing team thus stopping them going to the ground. The opposing team will try to rip the ball from the carriers hands to gain advantage - A ruck occurs when teh ball carrier is brought down and the two teams must attempt to push the other side of the ball to gain its position
