What is a good length for a high school punter and how long should I be able to punt while practicing?
In my opinion, punting is technically the toughest position in football to master. At the high school level where most players play multiple positions, it will be tough odds for a player to become a better than average/consistent punter unless they are able to specialize in just punting or just one other position. For those players who want to be good punters and do not have the time during practice to get their reps in, they must make the commitment to come to practice early (at least 45minutes or stay late). If a coach will allow 45 minutes a day for their punter to get their reps in, that would be great. If a coach has the skills to give proper instruction, they can teach the player to coach themselves so the player can work on their skills on their own and most importantly build confidence in their abilities. Absent having a full time punter, getting a player to basically step in on fourth down/punt and average 35 yards would be very acceptable. Sorry for the long answer to a short question!
