He preferred this and eventually had his name legally changed from Justin to Joba. According to wikipedia.org his birthname was Justin Louis Heath. When Joba (then Justin) was a little boy, his two-year-old cousin was unable to pronounce her brother (Joba's other cousin) Joshua's name correctly, pronouncing it as Joba instead. Harlan Chamberlain (father) heard this and liked the nickname, so he began referring to Justin (instead of cousin Joshua) as Joba. Harlan said the name was "dynamic." It's not specifically the number 62 that is significant....His number just has to add up to the number 8. See passage below taken from an article in the NY Daily News, Aug. 2007: When he was 12, his best friend, Nate Raun, died of brain cancer on Thanksgiving Day. Joba still wears a uniform number that adds up to eight - he's got No. 62 with the Yankees - because Raun's number in youth baseball was 8. He still keeps in touch with Raun's family and says, "I know he's still part of my life."
