How do numbers get retired in the NHL?

Well, I'm no hockey expert and I may be wrong, but I think this is what happens: Lets pretend some hockey player, John Smith (made-up name), had the number fifteen on his jersey. He was an amazing hockey player and did some incredible things no one had done before. Then he retired and moved to the Bahamas. Since he was such a great hockey player, his number will always be "reserved" for him on his team, so no one else can use his number. If you don't understand, try Wikipedia or just Google it. ;-)
