In 1846, the California State flag was conceived with a grizzly bear, representative of the many bears in the state. The state's nickname is The Golden State. The University of California at Berkeley then adopted the Golden Bear as it's mascot.
The school that has panda bears as a mascot in California is California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB). Their mascot is named "Panda," and the university adopted this mascot to reflect a playful and friendly image. The choice of a panda also symbolizes conservation and environmental awareness, aligning with the school's mission.
