On September 24, 2002, Mike Webster died of a heart attack at the age of 50. For years after retirement he suffered from amnesia, dementia and depression. He ended up living out of his pickup truck, and in his final years he lived with his teenage son who had to take care of him.
After death he was diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease, in which doctors believe was due to wear and tear on his body. Due to playing football for over 25 years, which included high school, college and the NFL, the doctors estimated that he had been in the equivalent of 25,000 automobile crashes.
The cause of Mike Webster's death was a heart attack.

There were two players with that distinction. Pittsburgh Steelers center Mike Webster was given that nickname. He played for the Steelers from 1974-1988. Also former player and head coach Mike Ditka was known as Iron Mike.
Mike Webster was the last player to wear the number in 1989. I do not think the Steelers will be giving the number 52 out anytime soon.
