Well-known sports, similar to Australian football, might be Rugby, Irish football and, to a lesser degree, American football. The types of people that like those sports would ordinarily be attracted to 'footy', as Australians often call it.
It has often been dubbed a 'family game' - like many other sports. If one were to distinguish it from the bulk of sports, it is more of a rough and tumble game than most. In general terms, it is not for 'the faint-hearted'.
