A box and 1 is a defensive play where four players on the defensive side of the ball are positioned on each corner of the paint(or large rectangle under the basket). These four players play zone defense, protecting each area they are in. The fifth player on defense plays man defense where he plays one player from the offense. This is mainly used if a coach wants a talented player from the other team not to score or get the ball.
