A batter is credited with a "Run Batted In," or RBI, when the result of his actions at the plate leads to a run being scored. I believe the only exceptions to this are if there is an error on the play, and otherwise, the run would not have scored, or if the batter hits into a double-play.

Note: If the batter hits a homerun, he gets credit for a hit, a run, and an RBI.
