There are six finials stored in the mahogany base, each finial a replica of the team emblems. The winning team finial is screwed onto the trophy lid each year.
These finials are therefore as follows
Wales - Prince of Wales' feathers
England - Rose
Ireland - Three leafed clover
Scotland - Thistle
France - Rooster
Italy - I am unsure as to what the Italian finial is and it does not seem to be mentioned anywhere, and unlike the other nations in the 6 nations their emblem is simply the Italian flag and their nickname the Azzurri meaning the light blues. It however would make a lot of sense if the Italian finial was related to the national emblems, the national animal is the wolf and national plant the olive & oak. We will probably have to wait until they win it to find out, cryogenic freezer anyone?
