He served as a vice president of the Chock Full O' Nuts company (a coffee maker) and on the board of the NAACP.

He was an activist for better living conditions and better employment opportunities for African Americans. He became the head of a construction company that built homes for blacks. He was the chairman of the board of Freedom National Bank, Harlem, NY, an African American owned financial institution. He was the first black television analyst in Major League Baseball. Right up to the time he died, Jackie Robinson continued to lobby for greater integration in sports.
