Montreal Canadiens (founded 1909)
Toronto Maple Leafs (charter member in 1917)
Boston Bruins (founded 1924)
Detroit Red Wings (founded 1926)
Chicago Black Hawks (founded 1926)
New York Rangers (founded 1926)
Made a correction above: Rangers were 1926*
Your question is kind of vague. If you mean the "Original Six" of the NHL, they were Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. It's impossible to know the first six in hockey history as the game was played only at local levels back in the late 1800's when the game was first developed. The NHL in its first year in 1917/18 only had four teams, Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, and a team in Toronto usually referred to as the Arenas but really had no nickname.
Fixing this answer as well I guess. The last person fell for a common misconception. The 'Original Six' teams were not the first six franchises in the league. The 'Original Six' era refers to the period between the 1942-1943 Season and the 1966-1967 season. Its believed the term starting being used to differentiate the six teams that played during this time period from the new expansion teams following the 1968 expansion draft.
The True 'Original Six' is as follows...
- Montreal Canadiens
- Toronto Arenas(1917-1920)/St.Pats(1921-1926)/Maple Leafs(1927-current) (Note: It's a simple name change, nothing more. It's regarded and rightfully so as the same franchise)
- Ottawa Senators (Original, folded in 1934, the current Senators entered the league as an expansion franchise in 1991)
- Montreal Wanderers (Folded after arena burned down shortly after league started)
- Quebec Bulldogs (Relocated to Hamilton in 1920)
- Hamilton Tigers (Would relocate to New York in 1925)
The so-called "Original 6" (Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Chicago Black Hawks and Detroit Red Wings) are actually NOT the first NHL teams. The NHL was formed on November 26, 1917 by the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and the Quebec Bulldogs, who immediately added the Toronto Arenas (later renamed St. Pats and then Maple Leafs) for their first season of operation. The Bulldogs were not able to play immediately, but were considered part of the league anyway. They resumed play for the 1919 season after an arena fire forced the Wanderers to fold in January of 1918. The Bulldogs became the Hamilton Tigers in 1920, and then the New York Americans in 1925. The Montreal Maroons were added in 1920 and the Boston Bruins in 1924. That would bring us to six active teams and a total of seven (1. Canadiens, 2. Wanderers, 3. Senators, 4. Arenas/St. Pats/Maple Leafs, 5. Bulldogs/Tigers/Americans, 6. Maroons, 7. Bruins)
Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, and New York Rangers.
There were 7 teams in 1940, but it returned to the original 6 throughout the rest of the decade.
The NHL began with 6 teams. They are called the Original 6. The teams are as follows: New York Rangers Detroit Red Wings Toronto Maple Leafs Chicago Blackhawks Boston Bruins Montreal Canadiens
It was back in 1996.
The NHL is comprised of 30 teams - 24 in the United States and 6 in Canada.
6. The famed "Original six" teams: Montreal Canadiens Detroit Red Wings Toronto Maple Leafs Boston Bruins New York Rangers Chicago Blackhawks
The second set of six nhl teams (1967-68) are as follows: Philadelphia Flyers Pittsburgh Penguins St Louis Blues Minnesota North Stars Los Angeles Kings California Seals
ARe u asking how many teams are in the NHL because there are 30 in all. there are 6 Canadian teams and 24 American teams.
The NHL added 6 new teams to start in the 1967/68 season: Los Angeles Kings, Oakland Seals, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Minnesota North Stars, and the St.Louis Blues.
there are 30 current teams in the current format. the Original 6 format ended in 1967, and since then, there has been a series of expansions ever since, up until the 2000-01 season. so there have never been 32 teams in the nhl.
