There are two defencemen, one on each side; they are usually tall and/or robust to protect the goaltender and their zone from the other team's offense.

There are three forwards. One on each side (1 rightwinger, 1 leftwinger) and one in the centre (centreman). The ones on the side are usually more prolific at scoring and the centreman more adept at passing the puck and creating plays.
