Soccer is played on a rectangular turf or grass field (usually 180 x 90 ft, or at variations of that size). The field is lined with required markings and there are two goals with nets attached at either end. A corner flag is located at each corner for corner kicks. Usually there is one center referee who makes the calls, and two linesmen who help him by directing the direction of throw-ins, fouls, or offsides. Two teams play soccer, and each team has 11 players (including a goalie for each team). Teams are allowed to have substitutes, which can be motioned on by the center ref. Each player is required to wear a team colored jersey, shorts, shinguards, and acceptable shoes (cleats or not). Long socks are worn over shin guards.
