There are currently four NCAA divisions for college football.

Division I-FBS allows 85 total players to receive a scholarship. In practice, all 85 players receive a full scholarship that completely pays for the players' college education.

Division I-FCS allows 63 full scholarships, but these may be divided among any number of players (or 63 scholarship equivalencies).

Division II allows 36 full scholarship equivalencies.

Division III does not allow athletic scholarships.

The NAIA also sponsors football in a single division. The NAIA allows 24 scholarship equivalencies.

The are several other small organizing bodies, and scholarships vary widely between these organizations (although none exceed 24 equivalencies).

Division 1

Divided into to classes FBS and FCS. FBS means Football Bowl Subdivision, these are the programs that participate in the bowl system and have a national champion determined by voters based on wins, losses, and strength of schedule. FCS means Football Championship Subdivision. This level used to be classified as Division 1-AA. These programs participate in a legitimate playoff format to determine a national champion.

Division 2

This is the next step below and FCS program. Many are smaller state schools. There are also private institutions as well. Playoff format is just like FCS.

Division 3

This is the next level below Division 2. These schools are smaller than D2 schools and are also comprised of many state and private institutions. Again, a legitimate playoff format is used to determine a national champion.

Well, several conferences has changed; but the only conference that has changed there name is the Pac-10, which is now called the Pac-12. Other conferences, such as the Big Ten, the Big 12, Mountain West, and the Big East, have either lost or picked up new teams. In addition, the SEC will also change soon. Rumor has it that Texas A&M is moving to the SEC.
