Ice Hockey

Ice Hockey uses six players on ice at a time. These are usually the goalkeeper, two defensemen (normally left and right), a centreforward (or similar position) and two wing forwards.

Field Hockey

Field Hockey has 11 players on the field at a time. These are usually the goalkeeper, two fullbacks (left and right, or forward and back), three halfbacks (left, centre and right), two wings/outer forwards, two inner forwards and a centreforward. Because of the number of players, many other formations and positions can be made to suit a team's needs.

In both variants, the goalkeeper may be replaced by another field/ice player at whim of the team. Ice hockey has rules regarding such a situation in regard to penalties and scoring; field hockey just plays as usual, with nobody receiving goalkeeping priveleges.

The Canadian sport of ice hockey consists of 4 positions. (1) Center, who lines up at center ice; (2) Forwards (Left Wing or Right Wing), who line up on the left and right sides of the red line; (2) D (or defense) who line up on the left and right sides of the blue line; And a goalie who stands in the crease. In total, there are six people per team on the ice at a time. A penalty results in having more than six players on the ice at a time.

There are 2 types of officials in hockey, a linesmen, and a referee, with orange strips on his arms. The linesmen calls the offsides and icings and breaks up fights in games. There only role is too watch the game and call the rules dealing with the lines. They also drop the puck at all face offs except after a goal, the start of a game, and the beginning of a new period. A referee calls the penalties to the best of there judgment and keeps track of who scored and who got the assists'. They also talk to the coaches when necessary are the ones who stop play when the goalie freezes the puck.
