A red card is shown when a player is sent off. A send off is given for misconduct. Misconduct may, or may not be, a foul. For example, it would not be a foul if someone punches a team-mate but it would be misconduct.

A player or substitute is sent off if they commit any of these:

  • serious foul play
  • violent conduct
  • spitting at an opponent or any other person
  • denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
  • denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player's goal by an offense punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick
  • using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures
  • receiving a second caution in the same match

A sent off player must leave the field and technical area and may not return for that match. Many leagues and tournaments also suspend that player from playing in the next match of the competition.

Can a referee caution or send off a player before the kick-off of the game and if so for what kind of offenses?

Yes. The offenses would be the same ones that he could give out during the match. Abusive language, unsporting behavior, and violent conduct just to name a few.

Is the suspension different for a red of two yellows and a straight red?

FIFA only mandates that a player be sent off from the current match. Almost all leagues require that the player also miss the next match. Some leagues increase the number of missed matches for more serious send-off offenses but, in general, the sit-out requirement is the same for any send off.
