The NHL was formed in 1917 as a 4 team league. Only 2 of the original 4 teams remain in the league today. The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto (known today as the Toronto Maple Leafs). Both franchises participated in the first ever NHL game.

Name Changes: Originally known as simply 'Toronto', in 1918 it would be sponsored by an arena company and was called the 'Toronto Arenas.' In 1921, it would be renamed the 'St. Pats' in order to cater to the large Irish population in Toronto at the time. In 1927, Conn Smythe purchased the team and renamed it to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The NHL was founded in 1917. The Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs (then called the Arenas) are the two charter members of the NHL still in existence. The Ottawa Senators were also a charter member but they moved to St. Louis in 1934 and the following year were bought out by the League.

In 1967, the league added the Minnesota North Stars, L.A. Kings, St. Louis Blues, Oakland Seals, Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers.

There were other teams in the NHL as well, such as the Ottawa Silver Seven/ Senators, however they folded and are not considered one of the original teams despite rejoining the league in the 90's. Officailly, The Montreal Canadiens are the oldest team as they were in the league from the start and didnt change names, like for example the Leafs were Originally the Toronto St. Pat's before becoming the Maple Leafs.
The Boston Bruins made the playoffs 29 seasons in a row from the 1967-1968 season to the 1995-1996 season.
