The NHL was founded in 1917. The Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs (then called the Arenas) are the two charter members of the NHL still in existence. The Ottawa Senators were also a charter member but they moved to St. Louis in 1934 and the following year were bought out by the League.

Montreal Canadiens ('17),Toronto Maple Leafs ('19 started off as the St. Patricks), Boston Bruins ('24), NY Rangers ('25), Chicago BlackHawks ('26) and Detroit Red Wings ('26)

These teams are also considered the "Original 6", even though they aren't technically the original six squads. They are however the oldest surviving franchises, and the six teams that survived contraction. From 1942-1967 (25 years), these were the only teams playing in the NHL.

In 1967, the league added the Minnesota North Stars, L.A. Kings, St. Louis Blues, Oakland Seals, Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers.

There are six teams reffered to as the "original 6" These teams being the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins. There were other teams in the NHL as well, such as the Ottawa Silver Seven/ Senators, however they folded and are not considered one of the original teams despite rejoining the league in the 90's. Officailly, The Montreal Canadiens are the oldest team as they were in the league from the start and didnt change names, like for example the Leafs were Originally the Toronto St. Pat's before becoming the Maple Leafs.
