I think Walter Payton did have the record over Jim Brown, but i think Emmit Smith Broke the record. Walter Payton had all 13 Seasons with 1000 rushing yards or more, and had the record for most yards in a game, but i think it was broken just recently. But i do still think Walter Payton is the Best Running Back of all time. ---- As of the 2008 season, that record is held by Jim Brown with 104.3 rushing yards per game. Barry Sanders is second at 99.8 rushing yards per game and Terrell Davis is third at 97.5. Payton is 8th with 88.0 rushing yards per game and Emmitt Smith is 17th at 81.2.
Chris Johnson.
Through the 2009 season, Johnson has the highest current rushing yards per game average with 104.3. However he has only played for two years. Historically running back have less yards per game as the years pass. Which to put this into context over his entire career (1956-65 ) Jim Brown averaged 104.3 and Barry Sanders averaged 99.8
For a single season in 1973 O.J. Simpson 143.1 Yards per game achieving over 2,000 in 14 games.
1) 6.40 yards by Jim Brown of the 1963 Cleveland Browns - 291 carries for 1863 yards.
2) 6.38 yards by Jamaal Charles of the 2010 Kansas City Chiefs - 230 carries for 1467 yards.
3) 6.13 yards by Barry Sanders of the 1997 Detroit Lions - 335 carries for 2053 yards.

Spec Sanders of the 1947 New York Yankees of the All America Football Conference averaged 6.20 yards per carry - 1432 yards on 231 attempts.
Former Eagle (and 3 other teams) quarterback Randall Cunningham holds the record for yards per carry. He averaged 6.36 ypc over his 15 year career. (However, Cunningham is a quarterback, and as a result has far fewer carries then your typical running back over his career).
The Running Back with the highest yards per carry average is former Cleveland Brown great and Hall of Famer Jim Brown. He averages an astonishing 5.22 ypc over his 9 year career.
