It was smart in the football sense in that Landry was reaching the end of his career, the Cowboys teams were constantly losing, and Landry himself refused to change his approach. Most people were simply mad at the way Jones fired Landry, he kind of just came in and said you're fired and replaced with him Jimmy.
It was a tough move as the Cowboys weren't going anywhere and it didn't seem like Landry would retire unless he died so it had to be done, it just could have been done much more smoothly.
Legendary Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry was fired in February 1989 by the Cowboys' new owner, Jerry Jones, who named University of Miami coach Jimmy Johnson to succeed him. Although the firing was a shock, there is no record that Jones announced it on TV instead of telling Landry first. JERRY JONES HAS PUBLICLY STATED THAT HE GAVE HIMSELF A SCORE OF 'F' ON THE HANDLING OF BUYING THE COWBOYS AND THE SITUATION WITH TOM LAUNDRY.
Jones' intention from the start was to hire his 1960s University of Arkansas football teammate, Jimmy Johnson, as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Otherwise, he would not have bought the team. The move proved to be a fruitful one. Johnson, who had won a national title as head coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes, rebuilt the Cowboys into a powerhouse that won three Super Bowls in four seasons.
The answer should be Tex Schramm. When Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 Tex was still drawing a paycheck as general manager. It had always been his job to hire and fire players and coaches, and he did this his entire career with the Cowboys. However, he informed Jerry Jones that this was his responsiblity. Being a new NFL team owner Jerry believed him and went to see Tom personally to tell him the news. When Jerry found out how Tex had misled him he fired him and vowed that he would never live to see himself in the Cowboy's Ring of Honor. True to his word Tex Schramm was put into the Ring of Honor shortly after his death.

Depends if it's smart or stupid. Stupid ones walk into fire as the smart, fast ones avoid it and move around from it.
