The "A" stands for "alternate captain." Usually two alternate captains are chosen in addition to a single captain. An "alternate" designation does not carry the same prestige and responsibility as the "captain" designation, but these players are still viewed as an essential part of the leadership core of the team.
The "A" stands for alternate captain and/or assistant captain.

The "A" stands for Alternate Captain. Many people erroneously refer to it as "assistant" captain, but the NHL Rulebook makes it clear that it is an "alternate" in Rule 6.2. Only the Captain or Alternate may discuss interpretation of rules with referees during the game.
First, Last and only Captain of the Colorado Avalanche is Joe Sakic. (Though during the 200 season Sylvain Lefebrve wore the c for a while with Sakic being out with an injury.) That is unless you are talking about the Quebec Nordiques as well in which case Jean-Guy Gendron was the first captain (in the WHA), Marc Tardiff was captain of the Nordiques their first year in the NHL. Hope that helps. Though starting the 2009-10 season with Sakic's retirement, Adam Foote (denfenceman) was nominated as the franchise's second captiain. Adam Foote is the last Avalanche playing still active with the avalanche to have been a part of the franchise's two Stanley Cups. (1996 and 2001)
