He played before any games came out.
Because he's the greatest of all time! That may not have been specifically the answer you were looking for here, but it is the only answer to any question pertaining to Sweetness. Case in point, "Hey man... Why did Walter Payton wear the No. 34?" "Well Walter Payton wore the No. 34.... because he's the greatest of all time." And here's another great example, "Excuse me sir, can you tell me why they call Walter Payton the greatest of all time?" "Well now my good man.... they call Walter Payton the greatest of all time, because he is....THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!!!" I rest my case...
Walter Payton played as a running back for the Chicago Bears from 1975-1987, but most of his teammates insisted that he could play any position.

Depending on his mood, Peyton's eye color varies with the mood he's in. Good mood, they are a bright blue like the sky... if he's anything else... frustrated, irritated, mad, etc, they are a dark blue.

"Sweetness" is considered one of the best pro athlete nicknames in history. It began with the crown chanting "Sweet" because of his sweet runs, but then because of his personality it caught on as sort of a double meaning nickname. I've read a few biographies on Mr. Payton, but don't recall any others. At least not any that stuck, and I'm glad none did. Sweetness is perfect.
