The dimensions are 94 feet by 50 feet.
So you know if the ball went in if it didn't hit the rim or the back board. Some times I play in my back yard and when I make close shots from a long distance I cannot tell if they went in or not because the rim and the ball are both orange and I dont have a net.
To slow the drop speed of the ball after a basket is scored
