In Super Bowl 42 (February 3, 2008) , the Patriots lost to the Giants 17-14. Had they won, as they did in 2004 and 2005, they would have had 19 victories for the year. As it was, their 18 games made them the third team to win 18 in a season. (Others were 1984 49'ers and 1985 Bears.) They were attempting to equal the unbeaten performance of the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who had a perfect record of 17-0 after winning Super Bowl VII on January 14, 1973.
