In the NFL there is a playoff system in place and then a championship game (the Super Bowl)
Bill Hancock, chairman of the BCS (a.k.a. Bull$hit Championship Series), the single-greatest obstacle to obtaining a playoff system for the college football national championship--a proposal supported by some 80% of college football fans according to almost any poll.
The Cotton Bowl is currently part of the New Year's Six bowl games, which have a significant role in the College Football Playoff (CFP) system rather than the now-defunct BCS. While the BCS has been replaced by the CFP, discussions about the future of bowl games and their importance in the playoff structure could potentially impact the Cotton Bowl's status. However, any decision regarding its consideration for future playoff formats would depend on the evolving landscape of college football and the governing bodies' decisions.
As of the 2023 college football season, the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) has been replaced by the College Football Playoff (CFP) system. The CFP uses a selection committee to rank the top teams and determine the four teams that will compete in the playoff for the national championship. The rankings consider various factors, including win-loss records, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, and other criteria. This change aims to provide a more inclusive and competitive method for determining the national champion.
There doesn't need to be Playoffs because there is a different system of determining who is in championship then in the NFL
The NCAA basketball tournament
The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) was a postseason tournament system used in NCAA Division I FBS football from 1998 to 2013. It included the top conferences such as the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 Conference, and the Southeastern Conference (SEC), along with several other teams from non-BCS conferences that were ranked highly. The BCS was replaced by the College Football Playoff system starting in the 2014 season.
