The state nickname of Iowa is the Hawkeye State. It got this name from a newspaper that was called The Hawk-Eye which was named as a tribute to Chief Black Hawk
Hawkeye has two traditional meanings which are somewhat related. (1) most excellent and clear vision, similar to the visual acuity of the raptors... (2) the highest title of marksmanship often awarded only after a perfect qualifying round This is also the nickname of the state of Iowa: the Hawkeye State. This is also the nickname of the University of Iowa; Herky the Hawkeye.
Hawkeye was a character in a book, by James F. Cooper, called "Last of the Mohicans". Not positive, but it seems most likely.

Well the capital is Des Moines but the town where it gets the name from is Iowa City. Its home to the University of Iowa and their mascot is the Hawkeyes so that's where the name came from. Hope that helps you!
Hawkeye, the character from James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans, published in 1826 (better known from the movie today). According to the Iowa State web site, "Two Iowa promoters from Burlington are believed to have popularized the name." The nickname was given approval by "territorial officials" in 1838, twelve years after the book was published and eight years before Iowa became a state.
Iowa's first people saw the land and named it Iowameaning "The Beautiful Land." Also the river running through Iowa was named The Iowa river before the state earned its statehood.
