As of right now, Notre Dame still holds the highest TV ratings. Like them or hate them, people tune in to watch them. As of last year, they were followed in no particular order by: Penn State, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Nebraska and Michigan. I believe Penn State was second but I do not know the following order.
Notre Dame has their own TV contract, Penn State benefits from being prior inependent which gained them a National TV following before they joined the Big Ten. The rest are traditional powers also which brings in big TV ratings.
So Notre Dame, followed by Penn State, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Nebraska, and Michigan.
EDIT: This answer is incorrect, ND had a 2.92 average ranking last year on TV, Nebraska alone had a 3.57. I'm not sure who has the highest, but it's not ND.
New York Jets and giants
You're confusing teams with the largest local tv market and which team is shown most often to a natioanl audience. New York is the largest tv market in the country but majority of their games are only shown to the local tv market. It's kind of like the Cowboy's which are the most popular team in the country yet in the last few years have minimal national exposure.
The New England Patriots have played 10 games already this season where they have been in prime time or shown as the alternate game to which ever local market you happen to be in. In addition to their consistent dominance in the NFL it seems every other week they are breaking some NFL record of sorts. Remember 2007? Fourteen of the 16 regular season games where shown nationally.
