On Jan. 13, 1968, in a game between the Minnesota North Stars and the Oakland Seals, Bill Masterton was checked and knocked to the ice, hitting his head. The fall caused a massive brain hemorrhage. Doctors were unable to operate and Masterton died two days later without regaining consciousness.

There have been two players who have died from an on-ice injury. Howie Morenz broke his leg in a game in 1937 and complained of chest pains in the hospital. He died a few days after the accident. Bill Masterton of the North Stars died when his head hit the ice after being hit by two players from the Oakland Seals in 1968. Masterton was not wearing a helmet.
