The First World Series the Oakland Athletics won was in 1972, but it was not the Athletic's franchise first World Series. From 1901 -1954 the Athletics played in Philadelphia, and from 1955 - 1967 they played in Kansas City. The Athletic franchise won 9 World Series titles starting in 1910.

Named after various 1800's teams of the same name, the Philadelphia Athletics were an original American League team in 1901, winning five World Series and another pennant in a year the World Series wasn't played. They moved to Kansas City and became the Kansas City Athletics in 1955 (and long time manager Connie Mack saw them play there just before his death); and moved again, to California, becoming the Oakland Athletics in 1968. Catfish Hunter pitched a perfect game that year for Oakland, thus establishing them in their new location quickly, before their string of World Series victories in the early 70's.
