The only rules concerning the dugout are that 1. There must be a 'bench' for each team. 2. It must have three walls and a roof. 3. Must be below the playing surface. It used to be traditional for teams East of the Mississippi to use the first-base side for the home dugout, and teams West of the Mississippi to use the third-base side. However, this is no longer universally followed.
