There really is no need to wear a helmet if you're just watching. Foul balls do sometimes pop over fences, but most parks have nets and it is unlikely you will get hit by a ball.

If you are playing, it is necessary to wear a helmet while batting.

Players are much closer to home plate in softball therefore the ball will travel to the pitcher and to the bases much quicker. There is a far greater chance of getting hit in the face with the ball in softball.

Yes. The softball helmet has both ears covered. The Baseball helemt has only one ear covered. That ear is the one closest to the catcher.
