Is it illegal to own gun with serial number ground off?

If it was a firearm originally manufactured without a serial number (serial numbers weren't required on firearms in the US until the passage of the Gun Control Act of 1968), then no. However, a firearm which originally had a serial number and had it removed - very much illegal.

Bolt action model 583.4 where is the location of the serial number?

Rifles and shotguns were not required to HAVE a serial number until the 1968 Gun Control Act. Many of the J C Higgins branded guns sold by Sears were made before then. And yes, it is perfectly legal in the US to own a gun that never HAD a serial number- but illegal to remove a serial number.

Where is serial number for harrington and richardson arms co bolt action model 348 gamester 16 gauge?

Rifles and shotguns made before the 1968 Gun Control Act became law were not required to have a serial number. Yes, it is perfectly legal to own a gun that never had a serial number. It is, however, VERY illegal to REMOVE a serial number.

Where is the serial number located on a harrington and richardson topper model 158?

IF it HAS a serial number, it will be stamped on the receiver (frame) usually on the left side (as you are holding the shotgun). However, serial numbers were not required by law on shotguns and rifles until the 1968 Gun Control Act. Prior to that most low cost firearms were not sequentially numbered, due to the cost to the maker. It is not illegal to own a firearm without a serial number, but it IS illegal to remove a serial number, or possess a gun whose serial number has been removed.

Where is the serial number located on a savage?

May not have one. Made from 1958-1970. Serial numbers were not required for riflles and shotguns until the 1968 Gun control Act. Perfectly legal to own one if it never had a serial number, and was made before the Act. VERY illegal to REMOVE a serial number.

Where is the serial number location on a savage 6870H?

May not have one. Made from 1958-1970. Serial numbers were not required for riflles and shotguns until the 1968 Gun control Act. Perfectly legal to own one if it never had a serial number, and was made before the Act. VERY illegal to REMOVE a serial number.

When were serial numbers required on rifles?

Until the 1968 Gun Control Act, no Federal law in the US required serial numbers on rifles or shotguns. For other readers- yes, it is perfectly legal to own a rifle or shotgun that has never HAD a serial number. It is HIGHLY illegal to REMOVE a serial number.

Where is the serial number on new elgin arms shotgun?

These were made many years ago, and may not HAVE a serial number. Serial numbers were not required by law on rifles and shotguns until 1968. Yes, it is perfectly legal to own a firearm that never HAD a serial number IF the law did not require it at the time the gun was made. It is illegal to remove any serial number from a firearm, or to possess one that has had the SN removed.

Where are the numbers on a Mossberg 151m-b?

If you mean the serial number- there is none. Rifles and shotguns (like your Mossberg) made prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act were not required to have a serial number. And yes, it is perfectly legal to own a firearm with no serial number. It is highly illegal to REMOVE a serial number, but guns that never had one are a different matter. I have 9 of the older Mossberg .22 rifles- only the one made for the US military has a serial number.

Is it ellegal to own a firearm in NH whos serial number has been removed?

Where can I find the serial number on a Russell Arms Co. shotgun?

Russell Arms was used by several makers in the 1890-1915 time period. If yours is a "top break" gun, remove the forearm, then open and remove the barrels, and check the frame under where the barrels close. However, you may not find a serial number. They were not required by US law on rifles and shotguns until 1968. Perfectly legal to own a pre-1968 gun that never had a serial number. Highly illegal to REMOVE a serial number.

Does the win model 60a 22 target rifle have a serial number assigned?

Probably not. That model dates back to 1933. Until the 1968 Gun Control Act, rifles and shotguns were not required to HAVE a serial number. Guns- including ,22 target rifles, shotguns, etc, purchased by the US Military had them added. It is legal to own a gun that has never had a serial number. It is VERY illegal to remove one. Most of the Mossberg rifles in my collection from the 30s, 40s and 50s never had a serial number. Winchester DID serially number large caliber rifles, such as the Model 94.
