A 16 yard hit (sometimes and in most cases called a 16) is a free hit taken up to 16 yards from the baseline and in line with where the ball went out. A 16 is awarded to the defending team when a player on the attacking team plays the ball off the back line. A '16' is not awarded to the defensive team if an attacking team member creates a foul of any sort within the 23 metre area. However if the foul occurs within 14.63 metres (16 yards) (including the circle) of the backline, the defense may bring the ball up to this distance, which is in line with the top of the circle.
