A double play where the short stop fields the ball, throws to the second baseman. He touches second base or tags the runner and then throws to first. This is a double-play (2 outs), so sometimes you'll also see a "2" at the end of "6-4-3".

It is the scorecard notation for a double play - grounder to shortstop (position number 6), thrown to second base (4) for the first out, then over to first base (3) for the second out. If it went to the second baseman to short stop to first, it would be a 4-6-3 double play.

The shortstop (6) fielded the ball, threw to the second baseman (4) who stepped on the bag and threw to the first baseman (3) covering first.

It means that the team, as a whole, has hit 6 balls so far in the game.
